Assistant Plant Engineer Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Plant Engineer - 1st shift

Location: Denison, Iowa

Salary: $115K - 140K plus bonus

Job Summary: As the Assistant Plant Engineer, reporting to the Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing maintenance and engineering operations within the plant to ensure optimal building and equipment conditions. This role aims to minimize mechanical downtime and enhance production line efficiency.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage capital project development and post-approval management to ensure timely and budget-friendly project completion with minimal operational disruption.
  • Collaborate with the Plant Engineer to coordinate project scheduling and execution, ensuring all projects meet safety, food safety, and environmental standards.
  • Lead the Maintenance Department in implementing innovative systems aligned with High-Performing Manufacturing Organizations, such as Preventive/Predictive Maintenance and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).
  • Optimize resource scheduling to maximize work output, reduce costs, minimize downtime, and enhance plant capacity efficiency.
  • Supervise the maintenance team by assigning tasks, enforcing policies, and clarifying work responsibilities.
  • Promote plant safety through training, procedure implementation, and continuous monitoring.
  • Develop and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with the Plant Engineer to monitor maintenance performance, including supplier effectiveness and equipment reliability.
  • Foster a positive employee experience through leadership, employee development, and coaching.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited four-year college or university and at least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment; or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience, including team development and management.
  • Must have experience with PLC and ammonia refrigeration.
  • Background in food manufacturing required, with meat or kill floor/harvest floor experience considered a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS systems.
  • Advanced technical skills in mechanical and/or electrical fields (e.g. PLCs, instrumentation).
  • Ability to lead resource planning and management in a large manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance systems, work order processes, preventive/predictive maintenance, TPM, etc.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate results from exposure monitoring equipment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, technical, and presentation skills.
  • May be required to work long hours and weekends.
