Job Summary:

The Quality Control Manager is responsible for assisting the Director of QA, Food Safety & Sanitation in the development, implementation, and enforcement of Food Safety Programs. This role involves planning and directing activities related to the establishment and maintenance of quality standards. Working under the guidance of the Director of QA, Food Safety & Sanitation, the Quality Control Manager supports the assessment of food quality, safety, and initiatives to enhance product quality, food safety, and consistency. The Quality Control Manager also provides leadership in quality and food safety to the team, and leads improvement projects to enhance plant quality and food safety performance. In addition, the Quality Control Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with SQF (Safe Quality Food) standards.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science or equivalent field of study or 5+ years of work experience in QA.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Food Manufacturing.
  • Experience with USDA, FDA, or CA Dept. of Food & Agriculture guidelines/requirements.
  • SQF Certified Practitioner and Experience preferred.
  • Experience working with Kosher, Organic, and AIB programs.
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years’ experience in a leadership role.

Trainings/Certifications Required:

  • HARPC/PCQI Certified preferred.
  • SQF Implementation & Auditing Certified preferred.
  • SQF Internal Auditing Training preferred.

Essential Functions/Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Director of QA, Food Safety & Sanitation with all QA activities as needed.
  2. Ensure enforcement of all company rules, policies, and procedures.
  3. Oversee, train, discipline, and coach QA Staff as required.
  4. Conduct formal and informal employee performance appraisals.
  5. Oversee raw materials policies.
  6. Administer the Food Safety Program, including Metal Detection.
  7. Conduct annual system reviews of SQF Program, Food Safety Plans, and Prerequisite Programs, including verification and validation activities.
  8. Administer the Weight Control Program.
  9. Administer the GMP Program.
  10. Verify company compliance to third-party standards (such as SQF, AIB, NSF, QAI, Non-GMO) to achieve exceptional results.
  11. Maintain up-to-date and organized QA records.
  12. Enforce Product Specifications.
  13. Administer the outside lab samples program.
  14. Audit and ensure effective Preoperational Inspections for proper equipment cleaning and sanitation.
  15. Administer the "Hold and Release Program".
  16. Administer the Pest Control Program.
  17. Administer the Recall Program.
  18. Manage Quality Assurance/Control Processes and Procedures, including writing and implementation.
  19. Perform Plant Audits.
  20. Conduct and understand product testing (Physical, Microbiological & Chemical).
  21. Promote an open and relaxed atmosphere to foster employee creativity and motivation.
  22. Administer product-handling requirements.
  23. Audit and enforce production floor policies and procedures to ensure SQF compliance.
  24. Administer the chemicals labeling policy.
  25. Maintain and promote a strong safety discipline and enforce company safety policies. Report unsafe acts and conditions and take disciplinary action as needed.
  26. Train and inform employees on the high costs of materials handling to emphasize the importance of care.
  27. Keep personnel motivated, productive, and well informed.
  28. Maintain excellent and professional employee relations.
  29. Promote teamwork at all levels and between departments.
  30. Assist the Director of QA, Food Safety & Sanitation in developing and updating job descriptions.
  31. Familiarity with Maintenance Department procedures and submission of work orders when necessary.
  32. Provide assistance to the Production Department when needed.
  33. Perform other duties as assigned.
