Engineering Change Specialist

Change Management Engineer Job Description

Change Management Engineer

This role is perfect for a meticulous professional with background in engineering change management, manufacturing, industrial engineering, supply chain, or a related technical area. The Engineering Change Specialist will collaborate closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, and other interdisciplinary teams to ensure accurate and efficient evaluation, approval, implementation, and documentation of engineering changes.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of engineering drawings, bills of material (BOMs), manufacturing processes, inventory considerations, and change-control procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and enhance the engineering change management process, including ECN workflows, procedures, governance standards, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Receive, validate, prioritize, and process engineering change requests while ensuring completeness and compliance with established procedures.
  • Coordinate cross-functional reviews involving Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement, Service, Suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate the technical, quality, cost, inventory, procurement, compliance, and scheduling impacts of proposed engineering changes.
  • Manage approval workflows and release activities, ensuring all required reviews and approvals are completed before changes are implemented.
  • Develop and execute implementation plans addressing production timing, effectivity, inventory disposition, supplier coordination, and communication requirements.
  • Support sourcing, procurement, quoting, and implementation activities for new and revised parts.
  • Evaluate the impact of engineering changes on production operations, including manufacturing processes, material availability, production schedules, existing inventory, work-in-process, supplier inventory, and material obsolescence.
  • Determine inventory disposition and rework requirements resulting from engineering changes and develop appropriate documentation and implementation instructions.
  • Maintain product configuration accuracy by creating, updating, and controlling bills of material, drawings, material master data, work instructions, and ERP/PLM records.
  • Serve as a primary resource for engineering change implementation and escalate complex or high-risk issues when necessary.
  • Monitor engineering change metrics and participate in post-implementation reviews to identify issues, determine root causes, and drive corrective and continuous improvement actions.
  • Develop training materials and provide training related to engineering change processes, implementation requirements, and product changes.

Qualifications & Experience

3–5 years of experience in engineering change management, manufacturing, industrial engineering, supply chain, or a related technical field is preferred. Strong knowledge of engineering drawings, BOMs, manufacturing processes, and change control procedures is required. Mechanical aptitude and metric system knowledge are essential. Proficiency with ERP/MRP and PLM systems is necessary, with SAP and SmartSheet experience being a plus. An Associate's or bachelor's degree in a related technical discipline is preferred, though equivalent education and relevant professional experience will be considered. Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial, as is the ability to work efficiently across departments and manage multiple engineering changes simultaneously.
