Welder Engineer
Position Summary:
The Weld Engineer will be responsible for the development and maintenance of welding and additive processes for a company located in Spring Grove, IL. They will provide support in problem-solving, technology advancement, and ensuring 3rd party program accreditation.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage the welding program according to AWS, ASME, and other industry standards in collaboration with the quality team for certification purposes.
  • Support welders and engineering team members in executing welding and additive processes.
  • Work closely with the non-destructive testing team to develop and maintain a weld inspection program.
  • Create and implement effective manufacturing procedures, including welding and additive manufacturing processes.
  • Prepare and submit customer-facing work procedures for new and repaired products.
  • Review and adjust welder qualification samples to ensure sustainable quality performance, working closely with the materials lab.
  • Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements.
  • Provide training on welding concepts and practices to office and shop employees.
  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve using a scientific approach.
  • Handle technical disposition of welding quality rejections and lead corrective actions.
  • Conduct research and development projects for process improvement and product development in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in welding and additive manufacturing through industry research.
  • Analyze and address internally and externally rejected forgings/welds.
  • Implement necessary corrective actions.
  • Qualify and oversee suppliers when required.
  • Represent the company in industry organizations upon request.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science (emphasis on weld processes) desired but will consider candidates with comparable industry experience.
Required Skills:
  • Experience in building and maintaining a certified weld program.
  • Intermediate understanding of physical metallurgy principles as they relate to welding, metal working, and heat treatment applications.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Technical skills include: Weld Engineering, Physical Metallurgy, Heat treatment Principles, Mechanical Testing, Microstructural Interpretation, Failure Analysis, NDE, Industry and Customer Specifications.
Additional Desired Skills:
  • Exposure to welding automation and robotics.
  • Exposure to additive manufacturing (Direct Energy Deposition [Wire or Powder], Friction Stir Welding, Electron Beam Welding).
  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector.
