Virtual Design & Construction Engineer

Supervising: Assistant(s) and Lower Level Staff

Job Purpose: This role involves developing, refining, and implementing Building Information Models (BIM) and other Virtual Design & Construction technology.

Description
The VDC Engineer will handle virtual construction requirements in Preconstruction, Construction Operations, and Consulting/Litigation Support Services departments. They will be a proficient user of the company's VDC software programs. This position requires a motivated and dedicated individual who is open to new challenges. The VDC Engineer will be based in Woodland Hills, CA, and may travel to jobsites and partner offices as needed, and work from jobsites as required. They will report to the Virtual Design & Construction Coordinator.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Develop and coordinate 3D object-oriented models
  2. Create 5D visual simulations using Navisworks or Synchro, incorporating BIM, time, and cost
  3. Perform clash detections
  4. Conduct 3D scanning using a Trimble 3D scanner and layout of work using a Trimble Robotic Total Station
  5. Incorporate actual job cost, model based quantity report, model based quantity take-off, and actual schedule information back into the model for as-built project control, risk analysis, and historical reference
  6. Create formwork and concrete lift and placement drawings, as well as horizontal and vertical control and general assembly drawings
  7. Support Preconstruction and Business Development efforts as requested by creating photorealistic imagery using Artlantis and other rendering engines
  8. Manage project document management (RFIs, submittals, PCOs, NOC, etc.)
  9. Process raw 3D point cloud scan files in software suites such as Trimble REALWORKS, Scene, Rythm or similar software, and produce registered files
  10. Generate as-built models based on scan files using Trimble REALWORKS or similar software and/or TEKLA Structures
  11. Convert and modify building model files or 3D scanned point clouds as necessary to create rapid prototype 3D printable objects using Materials, Magics, and SpaceClaim
  12. Conduct completeness and constructability reviews under supervision, and issue and manage RFIs

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or a construction related field, or equivalent work experience
  2. 2+ years of experience in the building or design industry preferred, but not required
  3. Understanding of VDC or BIM concepts
  4. Exposure to and initial experience with some Building Information Model (BIM) systems (e.g., Autodesk Revit, Bentley, Vico Constructor, TEKLA, Synchro, Navisworks, Sketchup, and similar software suites) required
  5. Strong computer skills, including advanced proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and BlueBeam
  6. Excellent personal management skills, dedication, organization, and open-mindedness
  7. Creative thinker who can thrive in a close-knit environment
