The Safety Manager is responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing work environments to design programs and procedures that prevent injury or disease in the workplace. The role includes maintaining and updating the company safety manual and policies, guiding safety activities on projects, and ensuring compliance with company policies, OSHA, and MSHA regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage safety and health programs, training, and inspections to comply with OSHA and MSHA regulations and industry best practices
  • Recommend and implement measures to protect workers from hazardous work methods, processes, or materials
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations
  • Order suspension of activities that pose threats to workers’ health or safety
  • Investigate accidents and near misses to identify causes and preventive measures
  • Conduct safety training programs and demonstrate the use of safety equipment
  • Maintain all safety training records
  • Investigate health-related complaints and inspect sites and facilities for compliance
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to institute control or remedial measures for hazardous conditions or equipment
  • Provide new-employee health and safety orientations
  • Coordinate and maintain “right-to-know” programs regarding hazardous chemicals
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans or procedures
  • Inspect specified areas to ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first aid supplies
  • Maintain OSHA and MSHA compliance on projects
  • Inspect and update the onsite OSHA and MSHA binder for compliance
  • Ensure foremen/lead men have all OSHA and MSHA paperwork and that it is organized and up to date
  • Perform random inspections of vehicles, equipment, and projects
  • Attend all required OSHA and MSHA training

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Maintain all expense reports and ensure credit card receipts are coded correctly and turned in weekly
  • Always maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Maintain company vehicle

  • Knowledge of trench safety, fall protection, and confined space procedures
  • Safety certifications
  • Strong preference for candidates from the heavy civil engineering field
